Getting Started with Global Retake

To play Global Retake, you must use the csgo_gc mod, which replaces the old CS:GO GC (abandoned by Valve after the CS2 release).

Requirements

Installing CSGO

  1. Open your CS2 library page in Steam, click Manage → Properties.
  2. Go to the Betas tab and select csgo_legacy.
  3. After downloading, go to your CS2 installation folder (default):
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Counter-Strike Global Offensive
  4. Select everything except the game folder and the installscript file (these are CS2 files).
  5. Copy the selected items to a new custom directory, e.g.:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Global Retake
  6. In Steam, click Add a Game → Browse and select the csgo.exe in your new folder. This adds the game to Steam.
  7. Open the Steam properties for CSGO and add -steam to the launch options (this hooks the game to the CS2 game ID for Steam networking and community servers).
  8. Launch the game once and then exit.

Installing the GC Replacement

  1. Go to Global Retake Resources and download the latest GC replacement from GitHub.
  2. Extract the files for your OS and place the following into your game folder:
    • csgo_gc folder
    • csgo.exe
    • srcds.exe
    Do not include any other files.
  3. Launch the game. If you see an item in your inventory (e.g., Karambit Fade), the installation was successful.

Playing the Game

After installation, you can play CSGO just like it was 2023! Enjoy the servers and the full CS:GO experience.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter this error:
csgo error
Restart your computer and launch the game directly from the folder using csgo.exe, after that close the game and retry in Steam again.
